What Every Investigator Needs to Know

Course Objectives:
This Course will provide attendees with a practical overview of digital technologies and their value for investigation and prosecution- to include computers, cell phones, GPS devices and the Internet. Specific attention is given on the best practices for each stage of your case: identification, seizure, preservation, forensic examination and court presentation.
Computers and the Internet Data as Evidence
This block of instruction provides the attendee with a broad overview of computer and Internet technologies, common types of crimes involving computers and the Internet, and how computers and the Internet can aid any type investigation.
Primary topics in this section include: Computer terminology; the three (3) types of computer/Internet crimes; use of computers and the Internet as investigative tools; seizing and preserving computers and computer related devices; computer forensics; finding Internet Protocol (I.P.) addresses and resolving them to a suspects physical address; introducing computers and digital data as criminal evidence; courtroom presentation; testifying to electronic evidence.
Cell Phone Data as Evidence
In this section the student will be familiarized with the different cell phone technologies, cellular providers, and the value of cell phone evidence for investigation and prosecution.
Primary topics in this section include: Technologies used by different cell phone providers; conducting cell phone forensic examinations; best practices and software solutions for cell phone investigations; seizing, preserving and analyzing cell phone and cell phone data; organizing and preparing data for court presentation.
GPS Data as Evidence
This block of instruction will introduce attendees to Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and their value for instigation and prosecution.
Primary Topics in this section include: Conducting forensic examinations of a GPS device; organizing and analyzing GPS data; plotting GPS data for court presentation; Track logs, TrackPoints and WayPoints; Bluetooth and paired device history, and more...
