training module, it is highly recommended for students to bring a

Cell Phone Technology & Forensic Data Recovery Certification is a one of a kind certification training module for law enforcement and members of the public safety / criminal justice community that provides investigators a comprehensive study of how to use cell phone records and cell phone forensic technologies in any type of investigation.


TRAINING OBJECTIVES:

The 4 1/2 day combined training module for the Cell Phone Technology & Forensic Data Recovery Certification includes all content and lessons as described in the individual courses Cell Phone Technology for Criminal Investigators + Forensic Cell Phone Data Recovery for Criminal Investigators respectively.

Cell Phone Technology for Criminal Investigators:

The purpose of this section is to expose the attendee to proficient and effective investigations utilizing available databases and cellular usage records.

Major topics include:

  • Types of cellular records available as a law enforcement official
  • Methods to acquire cellular records
  • Understanding cellular records
  • Proven ways to display cellular records in a court of law
  • Understanding the usage and manner in cellular tower records
  • Overview of commercially available software that effectively displays cellular records

Forensic Cell Phone Data Recovery for Criminal Investigators:

The primary objectives of this section are to familiarize the law enforcement officer and investigator with different cell phone technologies and teach the practical techniques used in forensic recovery of data stored in cell phones.

Major Topics Include:

  • Different types cell phone technologies, and how to identify them
  • Cell phone connection hardware
  • Cell phone software
  • Cell phone data/evidence seizure
  • Cell phone resources on the Internet
  • Legal issues and case law pertaining to cell phone data seizur

TESTING:

Those wishing to test for the Cell Phone Technology & Forensic Data Recovery Certification must have completed the combined 4 1/2 day certification course as outlined on this page.

For those past students who have taken both qualifying courses individually and wish to take the certification test, please contact Dan Hill at the PATC central office at 800.365.0119 (locally: 317.821.5085).

For those taking the 4 1/2 day combined course as outlined on this page, testing will be conducted at the conclusion of training on the final day.


SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE YOU TAKE HOME FROM THIS CLASS:

The following information outlines the software and hardware that is given to all students of this class. It is recommended that students bring 32 bit MS Windows® XP based laptops to class that do not have I.T. restrictions which would prohibit the installation of software listed below. If one is not available, a class lab will be provided for hand's on exercises.

HARDWARE:

Phone Adapter/Connector Kit: - Kit includes Cell Phone USB cable adapters to connect cell phones to computer for analysis by the included software, or by any PC based cell phone forensics software.

USB SIM card reader: - A universal SIM card reader used to connect SIM cards to a computer for examination by any software that is capable of analyzing SIM card data.

USB Flash Drive:
Portable storage "thumb" drive pre-loaded with all software listed below as well as many other utilities and reference documents relative to Cell Phone Investigations.

SOFTWARE:

Microsoft Street and Trips 2009: Fully licensed copy of this powerful mapping software. In the class students see and practice using this software to plot locations and movement of suspects based on data retrieved from cell phone carriers.

BitPIM: This Open Source program can be one of the most powerful tools for an investigator. An easy to use utility that recovers all types of data (including deleted data) from cell phones that use CDMA technology (i.e., Verizon, Sprint, etc...)

Exif Reader Software: Two Open Source small and simple to use programs(Exif Reader, and O'Panda) that allow investigators to view the "hidden data" behind pictures and images - like what kind of camera took the picture, when the picture was taken, and even the longitude and lattitude where the picture was taken in many cases!

MobilEdit Forensic (Trial): Students receive a trial version of this powerful software that is one of the most widely used cell phone forensics utilities in the world.

Device Seizure (Trial): Students receive a 30 day trial version of this premium forensics utility. Along with other premium utilities like Secure View, Device Seizure is a 'must-have' for a complete cell phone forensics lab. Includes physical and logical acquisition functions and is one of the most widely used utilities for newer SmartPhones like the iPhone and Blackberry - includes capabilities to extract and analyze data from GPS devices and other handheld electronic storage devices.

Additional Utilities: Students will also receive a number of other programs to help stock their forensics labs. Some of these programs include the following: FTK1.7, Blackberry Desktop Manager, Free 3GP Player, CutePDF Writer, OpenOffice.org Office Development Suite, FireFox Browser and investigator toolbar links, and much more...
