Three Technologies Every Investigator Needs to Understand:

THE CLOUD   -   MOBILE HOTSPOTS   -   IPv6

Why do I need to know this information?

I am in a small community, how is this going to help me?

Technology is changing! Where we find our criminal evidence has already changed and continues to do so! Technology is used to run everything from rural farms to international Fortune 500 companies to criminal enterprises. Regardless of the size of your community, understanding how technology works and how you can find and use the information it stores as evidence will benefit investigations of criminal activity of any degree and type.

Whether the Internet, a computer or a cell phone was used to commit a crime or not, the information that is available from these sources can place your suspect at the scene of the crime at the time the crime occurred and even produce additional suspects and evidence of criminal activity.

This training will enhance the attendees understanding of three technologies that drive modern computing and communication, and provide the attendee with practical steps in building a case for successful prosecution involving evidence from these sources.

ABOUT IPv6: The rapid expansion of the internet and the implementation of 4G has created the need for a new addressing system due to the amount of devices now communicating using IP addresses. IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4) which was the IP addressing scheme created decades ago has one fatal flaw, it can only address approximately 4.3 billion addresses. Luckily the minds that work on the back bone of the internet have had IPv6 for many years; however, Law Enforcement isn't learning the details as rapidly as necessary.

ABOUT 4G HOTSPOTS: The growth of 4G is also going to start causing legal concerns. Typically when an IP address is resolved, it resolves to a network in a home or office. What happens when it resolves to a 4G hotspot that is mobile? How do we know where the actor was when he committed the crime, and do we have the right to execute a search warrant on a house when the suspect may not have even been in the same state/

ABOUT THE CLOUD: In today's world, it is imperative to have access to your data from anywhere, at anytime. With today's smart phones, tablets, and mobile hotspots, it is now possible. Law Enforcement needs a working understanding of the cloud to be able to answer questions like who owns the data on the cloud, who has jurisdiction for the items, how can we obtain data/evidence on the cloud, and more.

TRAINING OBJECTIVE: This class will go over everything mentioned above, and more importantly, how do we legally track, obtain, and use data seized from these sources for prosecutions. In this class the student will be instructed on all of these topics. Additionally, there will be blocks of instruction, and hands on examples on how to prepare the appropriate legal process such as subpoenas, court orders and search warrants.
