COMPUTERS AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES AS CRIMINAL EVIDENCE
|
|
This course gives responders, officers and investigators the basic tools they need to understand computer-related crimes, preserve and seize computer components of a crime scene, and identify the legal and procedural aspects involved.
This class will focus on the critical digital technologies and online venues from the perspectives of both a criminal and an investigator.
Primary topics include:
-
Definition, function and purpose of an IP address in a criminal investigation - including how to find it and how to trace it to a physical address.
-
Legal & investigative procedures for seizing data from computers and other electronic devices (cell phones, iPods, PDA’s, etc…) as well as seizing the devices themselves in a manner that does not damage the data.
-
Legal issues related to how data as evidence can be used in your investigation and in court.
The course will end with hands-on team-building exercises where students will put into practice the concepts covered in class.
