PATCtech defines GPS Forensics (also called SatNav Forensics) as the reliable and repeatable process of acquiring, examining and analyzing GPS enabled devices for evidence traces of historical suspect locations and travel routes over a given time period.
OVERVIEW:
The increasing use of personal navigation devices provides law enforcement another level of evidence to support historical locations and travel routes of a suspect. This evidence has the potential, if handled correctly, to allow the recreation and tracing of path’s taken by a suspect before, during and after a crime. Furthermore, newer “Hybrid” GPS devices have the ability to “pair” with bluetooth-enabled mobile phones which therefore can create an even deeper layer of evidence similar to the data which is discoverable in cell phone examinations.
With variances in manufacturer and model, GPS-enabled devices have the potential to contain any or all the following information that may be used as evidence of suspect location over a given time period:
-
Track Logs and Trackpoints, the automatically saved “breadcrumbs” of routes traveled
-
Stored Waypoints, the user-defined “important areas” of a route traveled, i.e., “Home,” “Office,” “Restaurant,” etc…
-
Recent Addresses
-
Call Logs (Missed, Dialed, Received)
-
Paired Device History (Bluetooth) which can identify mobile phones
-
Incoming/Out Going Text Messages (SMS)
-
Multimedia (Audio, Video, Pictures…)
INSTRUCTION:
In this class the student will be familiarized with the GPS system and how it works. Each student will be instructed on how to examine GPS devices using various software solutions. The instructor will demonstrate how to extract the “waypoints” from the devices, and how to plot this critical data using commercially available mapping programs. Strong emphasis will be placed on creating functional maps for investigative reports and trial testimony.
HAND’S ON PRACTICAL EXERCISES:
At multiple points during this hand’s on training module, students will be divided into groups and practice the skills covered by the instructor. At the conclusion of instruction, students will be given the opportunity to conduct a complete Investigation from device examination to final reporting.
